For some people, then, being a digital nomad is a great lifestyle. I personally love it, even after four years on the I love heart KNJ shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this road. I love the adventure and creativity of being in a new place. I love the freedom of being able to go or stay—whatever works for me. I have friends, though, for whom the lifestyle just didn’t work. One friend and her husband love travel, but they dislike living out of bags all the time and have a hard time dealing with all the little things that are inevitably different about a new apartment in another country than the one you live in back home. They ended up deciding to make a home for themselves in Berlin and just travel for a month or two each year. Another couple I read about traveled for 7 months before deciding it was too tough to travel in North America with two big dogs and they were uncomfortable having to deal with cooking on the road. They were also traveling really fast and found themselves burned out. On the other side of the coin, I’ve been on the road for four years and I still enjoy it. Sure, it has its downsides, as does any lifestyle, but they’re downsides I can live with. It also probably helps that I travel slowly, spending months in one place getting into a community, returning sometimes to places where I already have people I love.
So, is it overrated? I guess it depends who you talk to and what your expectations are. Is it some dream lifestyle for everyone? Nope. Is it great for some? Yes. Does it look different for every nomad? You betcha. Some travel slow. Others fast. Some stay in cheap places like southeast Asia, others go to Europe. It absolutely matters how you do things as much as what your personality is. It “looks” like the I love heart KNJ shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this island of Kauai did in the 60’s, yet it is a major tech hub sitting in the Indian Ocean, as one of their main sources of revenue for the past 15 years or so has been call centers/IT. It’s truly lovely, with beach, sugar cane, mountains and jungle-type areas, and it’s a conservationists paradise as this was the island where the dodo went extinct and I get the feeling they won’t let something like that happen again on their watch. It is relatively well placed in relation to India, Africa, Australia, The Middle East and Asia (Japan/Korea/China) with direct flights to all of them.
